Liverpool Reservoir Structural Strengthening

Description:

The Liverpool Reservoir (WS0260) was constructed in 1977 and has an internal diameter of 80m, wall height of 13m, for a capacity of approximately 60ML.

Internal inspection of the reservoir roof found extensive corrosion on structural members and degradation of the bituminous coating on the reservoir wall. The severe corrosion was observed at the connections of all members, most notably the central spider and beams to wall connections with the majority of the reservoir roof beams corroded throughout.

Due to the location of the reservoir, the asset was operating at 100% capacity and could not be taken off service.

Key Aspects:
Freyssinet Australia was contracted to strengthen the structure with the asset in service.
The project involved development of an access system and procedure to access reservoir under live conditions.
Works undertaken included the strengthening of 20 rafters and the replacement of some secondary supporting beams.
Chemical dosing hatches were replaced.
Testing and refurbishment of the cathodic protection system was carried out.
