Links Creek Aqueduct Renewal

Description:

Links Creek Aqueduct spans over Links Creek, which only flows intermittently. The aqueduct forms part of the Ryde/Killara water main, a nominal 750mm internal diameter (approx. 818mm outside diameter) mild steel cement-lined pipe, which was constructed in 1930. The aqueduct is approximately 30m long with the underside of the pipe about 2.4m above the creek.

The aqueduct consists of 8 spans supported by concrete saddles. Corrosion was quite advanced on the pipe and steel structure with frequent areas of flaking paint. The primary intent of the rehabilitation work was to replace 5 pipe sections during a three-day shutdown and refurbish the rest of the structure to minimise future operational costs, ensuring long-term structural integrity and minimising the chance of any environmental damage. Freyssinet Australia was engaged as Main Contractor to undertake the remediation of the aqueduct.

Key Aspects:
Pre & post air, soil and water sampling for lead contamination.
Replacement of the existing walkway and handrails to both sides of the bridge and installation of a new security fence to either side of aqueduct.
Denso wrapping and concrete encasement of the pipe at North and South Abutments.
Replacement of old concrete saddles with new HDG steel saddles.
Replacement of old PFC beams with new HDG steel PFC beams.
Strengthening works to Main I Beam and ‘belly’ of pipe by way of compensating plates/strengthening plates.
Replacement of 750 main and dismantling joints.
Construction of a new scour chamber and installation of new scour valve.
Concrete patch works to existing piers.
Concrete reconstruction of 2 piers (450mm in height).
