Khartoum Road Aqueduct Refurbishment

Description:

Khartoum Road Aqueduct is located in Lane Cove National Park Creek and spans the Lane Cove River. The aqueduct was built in the 1930s and is part of the Ryde-Pymble Submain. In the 1950s a second main, consisting of a 1200mm diameter welded steel main, was constructed on the eastern side of the support structure. This main is fully welded with an expansion joint in the middle of the main span.

The steel framing of the superstructure is of welded and bolted construction. Both the 750mm and 1200mm mains and the support structure were coated with lead-based protective coating. Corrosion was quite advanced on the pipe and steel structure which had caused a breakdown in the protective coating system. The primary intent of the rehabilitation work was to minimise future operational costs and ensure long-term structural integrity. Freyssinet Australia was engaged as Principal Contractor to undertake the remediation works.

Key Aspects:
Pre & post air, soil and water sampling for lead contamination.
Replacement of existing walkway and handrails to both sides of the bridge and installation of a new security fence to either side of the aqueduct.
Removal of existing 750mm DIA Main.
Abrasive blasting and repainting of the entire length of the bridge and the above ground pipe.
Denso wrapping and concrete encasement of the pipe at North and South Abutments.
Replacement of old concrete saddles with new HDG steel saddles.
Replacement of old PFC beams with new HDG steel UC beams.
Strengthening works to Main I Beam and ‘belly’ of pipe by way of compensating plates/strengthening plates.
