Kissing Point Aqueduct Refurbishment

Description:

issing Point Road Aqueduct is located over Lane Cove River, Turramurra which is within Lane Cove National Park. The aqueduct is a 750mm diameter welded steel cement lined pipe, which was constructed in 1936. The pipe is lead jointed with some pipe joints having steel retainer bands. The pipeline is supported by pairs of concrete plinths, held in place by a bolt connection. The substructure supporting the aqueduct consists of 4 concrete piers.

The support structure consists of two spans, one at each end of the aqueduct and three central spans. The steel framing of the superstructure is of welded and bolted construction. The primary intent of the rehabilitation work was to minimise future operational costs and ensure the long-term structural integrity of the structure. Freyssinet Australia was engaged as Principal Contractor to undertake the remediation of the aqueduct.

Key Aspects:
Replacement of existing walkway and handrails to both sides of the bridge and installation of a new security fence to either side of the aqueduct.
Abrasive blasting and repainting of the entire length of the bridge and the above ground pipe.
Concrete encasement of pipe at North and South Abutments.
Replacement of old concrete saddles & old PFC beams with new HDG steel saddles & new HDG steel PFC beams.
Strengthening works to Main I Beam and ‘belly’ of pipe by way of compensating plates/strengthening plates.
Replacement of old sliding bearings with new stainless steel sliding bearings.
