Nelson Point Wharf Repairs
Nelson Point Wharf Repairs
Description:
Berths A and B Wharf at Nelson Point, Port Hedland was constructed in two sections in 1968 and 1971. Ship loaders 1 and 2 (SL1 and SL2) load iron ore, with dual loading capability. SL1 and SL2 were replaced and conveyors P25 and P118 had capacity upgrades in 2014. The new machines are larger & heavier, hence a structural risk to BHP‐IO ensued.
The Wharf Remediation Project (WRP) was established to assess and repair structural integrity issues. The project was approximately 60% complete when a previous contract was terminated. Freyssinet Australia supported G&S (a BHP panellist) to tender and secure a contract to complete the works, which included:
- Concrete remediation and extension of preventative cathodic protection.
- Pile wrapping and jacketing c/w surface preparation.
- Open work fronts requiring urgent completion.
- Shutdown works.
- Cyclone management.
- Heavy crew rotaon and mobilisation on 3&1 roster.
