Pymble Station – Footbridge Refurbishment

Description:

Refurbishments works at the station includeds a complete overhaul of the structure in not only the coating but also the structure during track possession (weekend shutdowns). Coating works involveds the removal of the existing lead- containing system via abrasive blasting and applying a two-coat system. Due to the presence of lead, it was necessary to ensure the encapsulation works prevented any release of dust outside the work area.

Civil works on the station included the replacement of steel girders, structural repairs to the existing heritage stringer beams via welding of strengthening plates and installation of new pre-cast treads. Civil works were undertaken to ensure the station was BCA compliant particularly with the riser heights.

Key Aspects:
This project came with many challenges related to design, with the scope continuing to creep throughout the delivery phase.
Freyssinet Australia was able to work closely with the client and their design to provide input in constructability, which resulted in better outcomes for all parties, for example, on the central stairs, where Freyssinet proposed to replace the bottom three treads with cast in-situ as opposed to precast concrete, in order to expedite installation.
