Clifford Love Aqueduct
Description:
The Clifford Love Bridge has considerable heritage significance and appears on both the Sydney Water Heritage Inventory and the NSW State Heritage Inventory. The aqueduct structure supports a 750mm rising main on the north side, a 150mm rising main on the south side, and a public walkway in the centre.
The footbridge and aqueduct support structure consist of two main steel arch spans which are 57.85m long, four short approach spans on the east side, and two short approach spans on the west side of the river. The height of the bridge deck above ground level is about 10m.
Corrosion was quite advanced on the pipe and steel structure with frequent areas of flaking paint. The primary intent of the rehabilitation work was to maintain the aqueduct to minimise future operational costs, ensured long-term structural integrity and minimise the chance of any environmental damage.
Key Aspects:
Freyssinet Australia was engaged as main contractor.
Scaffolding was engineered so that its erection and dismantling did not require scaffolders to wear harnesses.
The encapsulation unit was completed with proprietary material to prevent emissions of dust, spent abrasives, debris and paint spray mists to the environment.
Steel works such as bell lamps and bearings were designed and installed by Freyssinet Australia with the use of temporary supports to minimise each installation cycle.
The project involved working over water and working above a starch factory which was in operation 24/7.
