Moore Park Gardens Pedestrian Footbridge
Description:
The Moore Park Gardens Bridge is a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge that extends across the Eastern Distributor roadway at Moore Park, NSW. It was built around 1997 and has had no maintenance since its construction. The main concerns were the corrosion of the cable stays and mast, especially located around turnbuckles due to the environmental conditions, along with the spalling of the outer render which is located above the live traffic. The City of Sydney engaged Freyssinet Australia to carry out remedial works on the footbridge.
Key Aspects:
Removal of corrosion from the 12 cable stays and mast and then application of a two-coat protective system.
Reinstatement of inner and outer render.
Re hot dip galvanisation of steel perforated panels.
Removal of corrosion from handrails and application of zinc rich primer and replacement of expansion joint.
Freyssinet organised access plant and equipment to the work zone and facilitated the road closures on South Dowling Street.
The main challenges were working near pedestrian and cyclist traffic during the day shift and providing public protection, working with other contractors during the closure of the Eastern Distributor at night, and working from heights.
Delivery and removal of access equipment was a particular concern due to the small windows of road closures which were conducted with minimal disruption.
