12 Shelley Street, Sydney – Façade ACP Replacement
Description:
The American Express (AMEX) building, located at 12 Shelley Street Sydney, is an 11-storey commercial building mainly consisting of offices located in the heart of Sydney’s Barangaroo.
The building is owned by Charter Hall, managed by CBRE and the building façade was inspected by ARUP. The façade features bonded laminated panels comprising a zinc outer sheet, an aluminium inner sheet and a PVB interlayer.
The interlayer is a combustible material. As a result, a Development Application was lodged by the building owners to the City of Sydney to remove the existing combustible material panels and replace them with a solid metal non-combustible sheet.

This was a turnkey project for Freyssinet Australia.
Freyssinet’s role from a design perspective involved selecting an approved product to match the existing design, creating a connection between a new solid system to the existing curtain wall system, as well as checking structural adequacy of existing subframes and design load analysis.
Access was the critical aspect of this project to ensure works were carried out in safe manner and limited the impact of blocking natural light to offices.
Our strategy for access was to utilise multiple swing stages across the elevations, rope access for difficult-to-reach areas and a scaffolding tower to limit internal building access.
Class B hoarding was utilised at Shelley Street to provide overhead protection to the general public and to allow entry to the AMEX building as normal.
Over 500m2 of combustible cladding was safely removed and new solid aluminium panels were installed.
